Spring is finally here, and we bid a fond farewell to Old
Man Winter! In addition to the flowers starting to bloom and the tree buds
starting to awaken it is also time to begin thinking about a Spring cleaning
for the outside of your home.
At Zimmerman Landscaping, we offer a wide variety of cleanup options to fit our client’s individual needs and budgets. From trimming and pruning, removing weeds and leftover leaves in your garden beds to edging and mulching, let us turn the page from the colorless winter into a bright and fresh spring landscape.
Spring clean ups are vital for a healthy and attractive landscape. Below is what we recommend to our clients for a comprehensive clean up in order to prepare the property for Spring!
Removing Unwanted Debris
We recommend cutting off your perennial plants and ornamental grasses, which will allow new growth for the season. Removal of this debris is very important for a healthy start. At the same time, we remove any left-over leaves, weeds and fallen tree branches.
Pruning
Next, we prune any broken branches on trees and shrubs that have been caused by wind, ice or other winter damage.
This is also a good time to reduce the size of plants while they are still dormant. We’re extra careful to not prune spring flowering shrubs during this process.
Weed removal
Spring is a great time to refresh your garden and give it new life for the season. With this comes removing any weeds from the previous season or any that may have began to grow new life (depending on how warm the temperatures have been).
Mulch
Adding a fresh layer of mulch in garden beds helps suppress weeds, retain moisture and moderate soil temperatures.
It’s important that we don’t layer too much mulch on top of old mulch as this can create a layer that won’t decompose or allow root growth. We pay close attention to not pile too much mulch up around trees as this can cause rot in the trunk and create a home for insects.
With all this being said we recommend removing as much of the old mulch if not composted, as we can and top dress the garden beds with two to three inches of new (healthy) mulch to help your shrubs, plants and trees flourish.
We are firm believers that if you start off on the right foot in the spring you will be well on your way a beautiful landscape to enjoy throughout the coming year.
